Aroha for MU

Aroha for MU

Malo, kia ora, hello.

The past few months have been the most difficult and challenging of our lives together as a group of musicians, and more than that – as a group of friends. To lose someone like MU – the person who drew us together in the first place and is fundamental to our very existence – has at times felt all-consuming.

As we begin to slowly piece together our lives in this strange new world, we want to take a moment to acknowledge how grateful we feel for the unconditional support we’ve received from around the world – for the outpouring of love and aroha towards MU and his family that is carrying us forward.

For the members of FFD, meeting and connecting with MU was a watershed moment that has shaped our lives. Quite simply he was a relentlessly adventurous and determined creative force – the central cog in this artistic partnership that has guided our journey as creative musicians.

We know there are countless performers, producers and DJs around Aotearoa and the world who feel the same way – his impact and influence will remain forever.

MU-ey lived a big life to the absolute fullest. He was whip smart, inquisitive, loyal, funny and bloody competitive. We are incredibly lucky to have shared the studio and stage with him for such a long time. And we are blessed that when need to reconnect with his spirit – his wairua – all we need to do is put on one of the records he produced, or push play on the MPC, and there he is.

Our journey as a group moves into a new phase now. This true story has a new chapter – one with a twist none of us saw coming. It won’t be easy or simple, but the music lives on.

As MU used to say “Don’t panic”.
